It looks quite cute in movies but it is awkward in real life. Try it in front of a mirror and you will know why. For one it is difficult to balance yourself gracefully, secondly it is tough to look up and propose without feeling a bit sheepish.
You can propose to her while you are sitting at a dinner table or when you are sitting some place romantic, like at the beach or watching a sunset. There is something about proposing while sitting which is more romantic than proposing while standing.
Be very close to her and look her in the eyes when you propose. Feel the moment, don't be distracted by anything when you are proposing to her. That's why its important to choose where you propose.
